Dragonfly Project

The Trelusback site contains large numbers of dragonflies and damselflies. The species recorded to date include the Scarce Blue-tailed damselfly and the Small Red damselfly which is on the Odonata Red List.

These have been recorded at Trelusback and verified by the former Cornwall Dragonfly Recorder Dave Cooper, who is now retired. Photographs taken at Trelusback are below.

The Trelusback Wildlife Site’s Management Plan takes into consideration the needs of dragonflies and damselflies. The stream, ponds, seepages, bog, seasonal ponds and ditches are therefore being maintained to provide suitable habitat for dragonflies and damselflies, with special consideration for the habitat needs of each of the different species.

Additionally, a series of terraced shallow ponds were created in 2022. These ponds were created with the kind assistance of Kernow Conservation and grants from South West Water and Arnold Clark Ltd. Black-bodied Skimmer and the Keeled Skimmer dragonflies, not previously seen at Trelusback, have now started breeding in these ponds.
